International Students Welcome

When you arrive in Glasgow, there will be several things you have to do. Some things can be surprisingly tiring and sometimes difficult, although it can also be exciting!

Check out the headings below to find useful information about your first few weeks.

Top tips for arriving in Glasgow
  • The international dialling code in the UK is +44.
  • Train stations, transport services and some public buildings (including eateries), have free WiFi. Check inside the venue when you get there.
  • Consider the benefits of getting a local SIM card. Major providers include Three, Vodafone, EE and O2.

Local Hospitals

There are a number of hospitals in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde region. You can find out more about hospitals in Glasgow and their locations here.

Opening a Bank Account & Status Letters

Most students choose to open a bank account in the UK. Banks will ask for proof of address such as a status letter from the college; students can download this through their CityLife account. For more information on opening bank accounts in the UK click here.

Council Tax

Some students, particularly studying shorter courses, may have to pay council tax as part of UK law. You can find out more information by clicking Council Tax Information.

Emergency Contact Numbers

Police Scotland; Scottish Fire & Rescue; Scottish Ambulance Service: 999 (101 for non-emergencies).

If you lose personal belongings, contact Police Scotland on 101. You will also need to complete an online Lost Property form.

Religion

In Glasgow there are many places of worship. The College provides a chaplaincy service: chaplain@cityofglasgowcollege.ac.uk.

City and Riverside campuses offer a Quiet Reflection Space for contemplation, prayer and meditation.

Post Offices

Most are open 9-5pm on weekdays. Postage rates are calculated based on weight, size and service. Find out more on the Royal Mail's website.

Libraries

The College has two libraries (City and Riverside) for printing and book lending. More info on the College's website.
