I can't stand, but I'll stand up for you
Hello, I'm Ciara McCarthy, and I'm profoundly deaf with bilateral cochlear implants, cerebral palsy and autism. I also identify as queer and use any pronouns.
I'm running for VP of Diversity and Wellbeing because I believe I have the expertise to advocate for LGBTQ+ and Disabled students within the college. I've been fortunate to have gained experience within the charity sector, such as working with the National Deaf Children's Society and Mermaids. I have also had the opportunity to meet many politicians to raise awareness of issues that young disabled people experience. As a Social Science student, I'm developing an understanding of social dynamics which have historically neglected minority needs. Within this role, I hope to foster an environment where all students, regardless of disability, sexual and gender identity, race, religion and ethnicity, can be supported and encouraged to be confident in who they are.
I will work with the college to see how we can move forward to address practical issues such as lift overcrowding and putting in a motion for more inclusive and diverse education with minorities at the forefront of the coursework. This is something students have raised and is something I am incredibly passionate about.
When I get elected, I will ensure I put 100% effort into this position.
