As someone with dyspraxia, I know better than anyone how overwhelming Higher Education can be and want to make The City of Glasgow College a calm environment while still being stimulating for the brain.
At the moment, to get extra time or have any special requirements for assessments, students are required to have a formal and written proof of diagnosis. While I understand why this procedure is in place, it can often be a very difficult and long process to get an official diagnosis. If I was elected, I would like to work closely with student associations to research how students who believe they may have a learning difficulty can get a diagnosis and see what help the college can give them while they wait for their diagnosis.
I also aim to get lectures to work with students one-to-one more, in order to accommodate to different learning speeds.
I also aim to have more mental health resources on campus, and perhaps even organise group sessions or public speakers. I think this would be an effective way of getting students to talk about their mental health.
Finally, I want to raise awareness for inclusive groups such as the LGBTQ+ society. I am bisexual and only just learned about this group this year and while I have been out and proud for nearly ten years now, a group like this could be very beneficial for any students struggling with their sexuality and/or gender.
