Christmas can be a wonderful time of year, but also a very difficult time for many. Christmas Day is a time to spend with loved ones, eating ample amounts of food and enjoying each other’s company. However, for those without a home or financial struggles, the reality can be very different.

We launched the Sock-It campaign in 2018 with exactly that in mind. Due to the rising success of the campaign in 2019, it’s something we are proud to run annually. The concept of Sock-It is simple; we ask our staff and students to fill a sock with essentials like deodorant, toothbrushes, or gloves to be donated to those in need. Though these may be small items, they’ll make the world of difference to someone.

This year we chose to work with The Govan Pantry, a subsidised community shop that works on a membership system anyone in the Govan area can join. Unlike a foodbank, The Govan Pantry provides those in need with access to essentials and high-quality food at a reduced cost – saving an estimated £15 per shop. This ensures that families are staying healthy and budgeting well. The Pantry’s food supply comes from FareShare West of Scotland, supporting their surplus food distribution model and promoting sustainability in the community.

Mark Hamilton, one of our Student Engagement Officers at City of Glasgow College said: “I'm extremely pleased to be involved in supporting the 'Sock It' campaign that is being ran by CitySA this year for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the campaign is in aid of the Govan Pantry, a marvellous social-enterprise that does so much to support local residents in that area of Glasgow, and secondly, because at this time of year, more so than ever because of the coronavirus pandemic and job-insecurity, families and individuals are stretched far more financially.”

This year we asked that all donations be made by Wednesday 15th of December in time for Christmas and we donated an amazing 45 socks full of essentials to The Govan Pantry for those who may need it most. Mark said: “I feel that the act of giving and thinking of others is characteristic of this festive season.” In true Christmas spirit, we also donated £300 worth of toys and activities for children and their families.

Christmas is the time not only for giving, but for thinking about others. That’s what we’re doing each year when we launch our Sock-It campaign. We’re proud to know we’ve supported a local community group and we couldn’t have done it without the amazing staff and students that make these vital donations each year.
