In celebration of Eating Disorder Awareness Week, SupportED delivered a training session to some of the Students’ Association team.

As a Presidential Team, we are keen to show you, our student body, that we care about the challenges you may face in your life and how they can impact your studies. Most importantly, we feel it is important to be educated in how to best support you during your time at City.

The training consisted of SupportED’s service overview, whilst adding elements from their Eating Disorder Awareness training. This covered spotting signs and symptoms of eating disorders, understanding and awareness of eating disorders, and what we can do to help students.

SupportED is a community eating disorder charity that works with communities across Scotland to support people with an eating disorder, their families, and carers.

Speaking after the training, the team said:

“The SupportED training increased my awareness of the support available to students and strengthened my confidence in signposting. The session was welcoming, informative, and delivered in a really supportive way.” - Rebecca Ivers, Social and Activities Vice President

“The session helped challenge my assumptions around eating disorders as well as highlighting considerations on how best to support people with eating disorders. It was informative and thought provoking.” - Adam Crawley, Student Engagement Officer

“I found the training really beneficial and now feel much more informed about all the different types of eating disorders.” - Flora Irvine-Hall, Student President

“I learned about eating disorders that I had never heard of before and how broad the term eating disorder is. This training should allow us to better support students in the future.” - Euan Buchanan, Faculty Ambassador

If you or someone you know is struggling, there is external support available at SupportED, as well as support within the College.

The Counselling and Wellbeing Service offer Wellbeing Assessments to discuss how they can support you. This is a 30–45 minute confidential phone call where one of the Wellbeing Team will listen and work with you to find the best available support.

You can book a Wellbeing Assessment through this link or go to CityLife > Book and Appointment > Wellbeing Assessment.

The College website also has a Wellbeing A-Z with resources on a range of issues that can impact wellbeing, with a specific page on Eating Disorders and Body Image

For urgent support, please use the Crisis Support page. In an emergency, call 999 or NSH 111 (option 2) to speak with a mental health practitioner.
