Should City SA set up a Student App to communicate with students?

THE ISSUE

Students have requested a College App for years as a preferred way to recieve communications and access key information such as timetables.  Whilst the introduction of Canvas has presented us with a version of the college app it only keeps us up to date with our course work not our college community, meaning many of us miss out of college events and opportunities.

THE IDEA

An SA App could fill the gap missing from the current Canvas App by offering updates of events, Clubs, elections and a range of other student opportunities promoted by CitySA.  The app could use the same single use login that can be used to access the app and many other services within the college this would help students keep up to date with what the SA is doing on a regular basis, from events to societies and even our Big Student Elections. 

An app has been highly sought after from student feedback gathered in our monthly class rep meetings, regardless of the theme. There are plans in development to work with IT to have student timetables also on the app which would improve student functionality greatly. So, if we could develop the app to imbed the timetable data within it then this would dramatically improve the lives of the students and make it a lot more accessible to all of our students in City of Glasgow College.

THE IMPACT

Wtih Apps being easier to use it would be expected that Apps are the way forward, they are compact and easy to use, far more efficient than having to use multiple logins on websites just to get a simple bit of information. They are also highly effective at reaching people on a wider spectrum, this has been demonstrated through the Canvas App that the college already uses.
